PENINSULA, in
Scotland is situated on the Western side and has been
home to no less than 20 Scottish records. Stranraer is
at the top of the peninsula and is a good mark in itself
but is by no means all.
Ardwell Bay and further down, Port Logan Bay, have
very deep water and there are strong currents which
give rise to Herring, Mackerel, Cod, Coalfish and double
figure Pollack are not uncommon. Other species include
Wrasse, Lesser Spotted Dogfish and Bass.
Both marks have their own slipway where Rays, Tope
and Conger can be caught. There are kelp beds a plenty
and Port Logan also has a number of wrecks which yield
Pollack, Ling and Conger. Access is much easier at Port
Logan than at Ardwell where the road is quite uneven
and narrow.
Best baits here would firstly be Sandeel but also Lugworm,
Ragworm, Mackerel or Herring are the main favourites.
The latter are widely available in the summer to buy
or indeed to catch! Lure fishing with feathers or spinners
in the evenings when the shoals are in will bring you
some good catches. Mackerel is by far the best bait
for the bigger Pollack, Cod and Coalfish from the rocks.
A running ledger rig is recommended by the locals.
Safety equipment is always strongly recommended when
sea fishing but no more so than at these two marks where
conditions can be quite tough and the currents are fast.
