In this part of the site we've taken a look at some of the most popular species of fish targeted by UK fishermen and how to go about catching them. There is also a simple 'rule of thumb' guide to setting up your basic tackle before you even start looking at rigs.
This depends on where exactly you are fishing but can be summarised as follows : Load your spool with the appropriate line for your fishing situation (see below) then attach approximately 23ft of a shock leader which is twice the breaking strain of your reel line.
Beach fishing - main reel line of 20lb bs, shock leader of 40lb bs and weights of between 3oz and 6oz depending on current and wind. A 5oz lead is a good place to start.
Harbour & Estuary fishing - Use a 12lb bs main reel line, 24lb bs shock leader and upto 2oz of lead.
Pier fishing - Use 15lb bs main reel line, 30lb bs shock leader and upto 1oz of lead.
Rock fishing - Use 18lb bs main reel line, 36lb bs shock leader and about 1 - 1.5oz of lead.
