Go Fishing  >> Preferred baits | Terrain clues | Fishing by season | Knots | Rigs

When making rigs, attaching individual pieces of tackle, or just tying your pre-made rigs to your main line, you'll need to know the best knot for the purpose. There are so many knots and variations, we have selected a "Top Five" which we think are definitely worth knowing, followed by some more general purpose knots. Click on the links below to view each knot !

Albright - Blood bight - Blood - Centauri - Uni - Round turn and two half hitches - Figure of eight - Reef - Sheet bend - Double sheet bend - Anchor hitch or Fisherman's bend

KNOT 3 - BLOOD KNOT
For joining two lines of similar thickness
Step 1
Place the two lines flat on the table with the line coming in from the left passing over the top of the line coming in from the right as shown.
Step 2
Pick up the end of the line coming in from the right which is at present underneath the other line and place it downwards over the top of the other line.
Step 3
Wrap this same end underneath the other line so that it forms an entire loop around that line. Repeat this looping process 4 more times so that it is wrapped around a total of 5 times as shown.
Step 4
Still working with the same end, bring that end up and back over the looping effect and pass it between the two lines as shown.
Step 5
Repeat the process with the other loose end, wrapping it around the main line in the opposite direction. Be sure to wrap it around 5 times as before.

Once you have done this bring the end you are now working with back on itself over the looping effect you have just made and pass it between the two lines in the centre of the formation as before.
Step 6
Pull the knot tight and trim the ends. The knot formation should now look like the picture shown here.
