Here's a few well
recognised basic rigs for reference including a brief description of
the best situation for each. Click on the rig type below for details or scroll through the selection.
RIG
4 - FLOAT RIG Using
a float will allow you good control over the height presentation
of your bait in the water in order to target mid to surface
level fish such as Mackerel and Garfish.
Step
1
Tie a knot such as a Blood Bight knot at a position on the
line beyond which the float should slide no further.
Use a knot which you find easy to move should you wish to
change the height of the bait in the water later on.
Step 2
Next, thread a bead onto your line followed by your chosen
float.
Step 3
Slide a cannonball lead onto you lne followed by another
bead.
Step 4
Tie a swivel at the end of your line using a Centauri knot.
Step 5
Take your hook length trace and tie it to the other end
of your swivel
Step 6
Finally, tie the other end of your trace to your chosen
hook using a Uni knot.
RIG
5 - ROTTEN BOTTOM The
rotten bottom rig is the part of the rig which attaches the
lead. It is an excellent way to rig your lead when you will
be bottom fishing or fishing over rough or weedy ground where
the lead is likely to snag. With a weak link to the lead it
means that, if snagged, the lead will break off from the rig
without losing the whole rig or your prize.
Step
1
Attach a three way swivel to the end of your line. On the
other end of the swivel tie a short length of leader line.
Step 2
Make a loop in the end of your leader line with a Blood Bight
knot.
Step 3
Now select a short length of weaker line and attach it to
the loop using a Centauri knot.
Step 4
Attach the other end of the weaker line to your lead using
a similar knot.
Step 5
When casting, use a bait clip or similar to link the lead
weight to the loop of stronger leader line so that the weaker
line will not snap whilst casting as there is no weight on
it. When the rig hits the water, the clip will release the
lead into it's prepared position on the rig.
RIG
6 - THREE HOOK PATERNOSTER RIG This
multi-hook rig allows you to have more than one chance of
success at any one time by fishing at three different levels
in the water. You may even wish to alter the bottom hook to
the baited spoon rig setup for flatties. Use the appropriate
hook size for each level based on what you believe is most
likely to take it at that height in the water.
Step 1
Tie a swivel to the end of your main line. To the other end,
attach a length of leader line.
Step 2
Slide on a bead, then a swivel, then another bead and place
crimps either side of this formation to restrict it's movement
to your exact positioning on the line.
Step 3
Then take a hook length trace and attach it your swivel using
a Uni knot.
Step 4
At the other end of your hook length trace attach your chosen
hook.
Step 5
For a 3 hook paternoster like the one shown here, repeat steps
2 - 4 three times.
Step 6
Finally, attach your lead weight to the end of the leader
line using a Uni or Centauri knot.
